Despite the highly contested and spirited campaigns that preceded the November 2019 elections, President Hage Geingob said all the parties are united in the collective responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing of all Namibians.

Geingob said this when he delivered the State of the Nation Address in Windhoek Thursday.

The president told the parliamentarians that they are faced with the realities of today and that a significant task awaits them.

“As in every healthy democracy, I expect lively discourse, as you deliberate on how best to steer our country towards a future of shared prosperity. However, let us bear in mind that there are no enemies in this House.

“The enemies we face are those that pose a danger to all Namibians: namely unemployment, low economic growth, infectious diseases, inadequate shelter, corruption, crime, gender-based violence and other scourges that threaten the socio-economic fabric of our society,” he stated.

The people, he added, elected the parliamentarians to defend Namibia’s hard-won liberty, to maintain national unity and deliver justice in the Namibian House.

“In this regard, we must collectively commit to fulfilling this obligation, through regular attendance of sessions, robust Parliamentary debate and active Committee discussions. Let us maintain decorum and uphold a high standard of conduct in this beacon of our democracy,” he added.
