President Hage Geingob’s recent commitment to increasing the old-age grant has sparked scrutiny from various analysts, with concerns raised about its sustainability.
The President, in his New Year’s speech for 2024, expressed his intention to raise the old-age pension grant to N$2000 or more before leaving office.
Under Geingob’s reign, the government has increased the old-age pension grant from N$600 in 2016 to the current N$1,400, drawing significant attention to the matter.
Nearly 203 000 Namibians are recipients of the old-age pension grant.
Political analyst Ndumba Kamwanyah welcomed the initiative to enhance the social wealth of the elderly but emphasised the need for a holistic approach to promote overall social welfare. He stressed the importance of addressing other challenges in addition to the old-age grant, advocating for creating opportunities and employment to support pensioners caring for others.
