African countries have been urged to strengthen their commitment to the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement by introducing environmental protocols to address climate challenges effectively.
Already struggling with other macroeconomic challenges such as poverty and unemployment, Africa is also one of the continents vulnerable to climate change challenges.
To address some of the problems associated with climate change, Gerhard Erasmus, a trade law Professor and associate at the Trade Law Centre (Tralac), proposed that Africa must integrate climate change protocols within the AfCFTA to bolster sustainable development efforts.
Erasmus emphasises that climate change poses a significant obstacle to sustainable development, imperilling the livelihoods of millions.
