Five SADC member states are grappling with ongoing cholera outbreaks, contributing to a staggering 73% of reported cases across Africa following the virus’ resurgence globally.

Last year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) classified the global resurgence of cholera as a Grade 3 emergency, which requires a comprehensive response at national, regional, and global levels.

During a virtual Council of Ministers meeting held yesterday, SADC’s Executive Secretary, Elias Magosi, expressed deep concern over the escalating trend of cholera infections recorded in the region, particularly since the beginning of the rainy season late last year.
