Fiji claim back-to-back gold medals in 7’s rugby
Fiji defeated New Zealand 27-12 in the gold medal final for the men’s 7’s rugby competition.
It was a special and emotional win for the Fijian’s who have been in a bubble since Easter and haven’t seen their family.
The team’s ventures in the last couple of months also saw them head to Australia where they had to quarantine for two weeks before taking part in a tournament.
The match was a clash between the reigning world series champions taking on the Rio Olympics champions. This was a repeat and the opportunity fro New Zealand to get revenge for their Rio 2016 quarterfinal loss against the Fijians. But, the islanders have been unbeaten in the Olympics competition leading up to the final.
Fiji drew early blood, scoring two tries in quick succession before the All Blacks were able to get one back through captain Scott Curry. Then it was game on after Sione Molia crossed the just before half time to bring New Zealand within a try and conversion of Fiji.
But Fiji never let up in attack, putting the All Blacks under the pump, which would pay off as they managed to score two tries in the second half to put their win beyond doubt.
