THE TWILIGHT WITH MATHIAS (20 OCTOBER 2025)
A Call for Road Safety in Namibia As the festive season draws near, our roads begin to see an increase in activity. Families travel to visit loved ones, people take holidays, and businesses continue to operate at full pace to meet the demands of the season. With this increased activity comes a heightened risk on our roads, and unless we take the necessary precautions, lives will be lost — as they already have been this year.
This is not just a call for caution — it is a desperate plea for change. Road fatalities have become a national crisis in Namibia. Each death on our roads represents not just a number, but a human life — someone’s parent, child, friend, or co-worker. Behind every fatal crash is a grieving family, a shattered community, and a nation robbed of its potential.
One of the most alarming contributors to these fatalities is drinking and driving. Despite years of awareness campaigns, the message still does not seem to be sinking in for everyone. Therefore, we must reinforce it, loudly and clearly: Do not drink alcohol and drive.
