According to the Encyclopedia Colonizers, or Encyclopedia Britanica if you wanna be politically correct, the when voting for a new pope, they burn the ballot pappers after and if no candidate has received the majority votes, they release black smoke but if a new pope has been elected, they add chemicals to the ballot papers before burning them to produce white smoke.
