Throughout the entire month of October and the first week of November, residents and industries in Windhoek have been using excessive amounts of water despite a critical water shortage in the city.
Alarmingly, the primary water supplier to Windhoek, the Von Bach Dam, is currently at just 17.9% capacity. The city’s water reclamation system is struggling to meet the demand, and boreholes, originally intended for emergencies, are being increasingly relied upon.
City of Windhoek water consumption updates reveal that for the entire month of October, the city’s residents have consumed 20% more water than required. This is in direct contradiction to the 10% water-saving requirement under category C for water scarcity.
The current hot weather has exacerbated the situation, leading to higher consumption rates. Windhoek has an annual water consumption of approximately 26 million cubic metres.
