The diplomatic rift between South Africa and the United States could have economic implications for Namibia, given the interconnected trade ties with the southern neighbor.

 

This follows U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s declaration of South Africa’s ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rasool, as persona non grata, labeling him a “race-baiting politician.”

International relations lecturer Lesley Blaauw warns that a decline in South Africa-U.S. trade could lead to reduced revenue from the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu), impacting Namibia’s financial inflows.

Namibia’s currency is pegged to the South African rand, and both countries are Sacu members, making them vulnerable to disruptions in trade.
