The local job market is still struggling to absorb thousands of job seekers registered on the government’s online employment system amid the growing national unemployment rate.

For example, the job market was only able to absorb 288 individuals out of the 3 927 jobseekers referred to employers for possible placement in the second quarter of 2023.

Among the 288 jobseekers recruited, 162 are female while 126 are male.

This information was released by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation in its quarterly update last week.

The ministry said the job seekers who were referred for possible placement were sourced from the Namibia Integrated Employment Information System (NIEIS), a national pool where active job seekers register.

The system, hosted by the Ministry of Labour, operates under the Employment Services Act, obligating the Employment Services Bureau to facilitate job placements.
