Namibia faces a significant shortfall in domestic vegetable oil production, leading to heavy reliance on imports to meet its domestic demand.
According to data from a Market Intelligence analysis conducted by the Namibia Agronomic Board, imports of vegetable oils amounted to N$874.9 million in 2022, covering a total of 24,145 tons.
Despite this substantial import figure, Namibia also recorded significant exports of vegetable oils, totaling N$1,966 million, albeit dominated by re-exports.
These figures underscore the country’s complex relationship with vegetable oil trade and highlight the need for strategic interventions to enhance domestic production.
The analysis, which focused on various edible vegetable oils consumed in Namibia, such as sunflower oil, palm oil, soybean oil, olive oil, and canola or rapeseed oil, sheds light on production, consumption, trade, and price trends from global, regional, and domestic perspectives.
