A standing committee on Health, Social Welfare, and Labour Affairs of the National Council released their report on the impact of the 2008/2009 basic income grant pilot project that was conducted in the Otjivero-Omitara area.

 

Members of the community confirmed that the poverty levels significantly dropped when the basic income grant kicked off.

 

“Beneficiaries claimed that the household poverty dropped significantly as families could afford groceries, cosmetics, and clothing items,” the committee said.

 

“An increase in economic activity was recorded as some beneficiaries used their combined income to start small businesses such as brick making, selling ice, baking of bread, dressmaking and shoe repairs,” the committee also added on the effect.
