An analysis by Reuters researchers reveals that global electricity generation from coal reached unprecedented levels in 2023, with thermal coal exports surpassing 1 billion metric tons for the first time.

These findings shed light on the persistent growth of coal use in power systems, despite widespread commitments to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Coal-fired electricity generation reached 8,295 terawatt hours (TWh) through October, marking a 1% increase from the same period in 2022 and the highest on record, according to the environmental think tank Ember.

Total thermal coal exports for the entire year were 1.004 billion metric tons, reflecting a significant rise of 6.6% (62.5 million tons) from 2022, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler.
