Government Offices, Ministries, Agencies, and private sectors north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence are disregarding directives to procure beef products from northern farmers.
This defiance, according to a latest annual report by the Meat Corporation of Namibia, (Meatco) is attributed to existing supply contracts with southern suppliers.
The directive encouraging public and private en- tities to start buying beef from suppliers in the north was first issued by the former finance minister Calle Schlettwein in 2019.
It also included local authorities and state-owned businesses.
Meatco’s assessment indicates that some of the OMAs, retailers and hospitality operators in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) are still acquiring their meat products from operators south of the VCF due to existing contracts.
