Fisheries Minister Derek Klazen has expressed concern that by-catching is becoming an alarming trend in the fishing industry, accusing some companies of deliberately doing it.
The practice, according to Klazen, has negatively affected the species such as hake, mackerel, and pilchard within the horse mackerel subsector.
By-catch refers to fish or other marine species caught unintentionally while fishing for specific species or sizes.
While voicing his concerns, Klazen suggested that the prevalence of high by-catches indicates a deliberate approach in these landings, raising suspicions that they are intentionally targeted for their economic value.
