In 2019, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) ordered the government of Venezuela to pay Conocophillips, a US oil and gas giant an amount of $8.7 billion equal to over N$ 140 billion in compensation for the it’s unlawful expropriation of ConocoPhillips’ investments in Venezuela in 2007.
