The Ugandan government has placed an immediate restriction of import and customs clearance of Starlink technology and communications devices. According to letter from the Ugandan Revenue Authority, the equipment would have to be cleared by the chief of the army of Uganda Peoples Defense Force.
The chief of the army is president Yoweri Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The communique shows that the related staff have to adhere to the new development immediately. The Memorandum was shared on the Facebook account of Larry Madowo, a CNN Uganda correspondent.
Madowo noted that these restrictions come a few weeks before the 2026 general election for Uganda. “The ban comes just 24 days before January’s general election. The government switched off the internet during the 2021 polls,” Madowo explained.
