THE EARLY MORNING SCOOP WITH LOISE (24 JUNE 2025)
1. NamPower has officially kicked off construction of the N$1.6 billion Sores/Gaib Solar Power Station, a 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant located northwest of Rosh Pinah. This project marks NamPower’s largest solar installation to date and aims to diminish Namibia’s reliance on imported electricity and fossil fuels, thereby significantly enhancing the national energy mix. The power station is expected to create over 300 jobs during its construction phase and will allocate 25% of the contract value to local content.
Let’s hear from Paulus Hangula, an economist, who will help us unpack this development.
2. David Shoombe spoke with Kleopas Nepolo from Millennium Refrigeration and Electrical Services (Pty) Ltd, who provided further insights into this project.
3. Food insecurity remains a serious challenge in Namibia, affecting a significant portion of the population. Recent analyses show that 1.15 million people, accounting for 38% of the population, are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, urgently necessitating action.
Every year, a segment of our population grapples with food scarcity, either due to insufficient production or an inability to afford food. This results in persistent food insecurity, despite our nation’s capacity to cultivate various crops, including rice.
To shed light on this pressing issue, we’ll listen to farmer Martin Shuundeni as he explains what food security is and how it can be achieved.
4. The Financial Intelligence Center (FIC) has presented its 2024/2025 Annual Report. The FIC’s director, Bryn Eiseb, revealed that during the reported period, the center provisionally restricted up to N$96.9 million in efforts to combat money laundering and financial crimes.
