2. Namibia’s wool sector, particularly the Karakul pelt industry, is a crucial component of the nation’s economy. Although wool exports represent a smaller portion of overall export value compared to minerals and other goods, the industry significantly contributes to employment and rural livelihoods.
To gain a better understanding of this industry and market dynamics, Moses Helao, in this sector spoke to us.

3. The government has recently reduced the export levy on various raw skins. The export levy on raw skins and hides has decreased from 60% to 15%, while the levy on pickled skins has been lowered from 15% to 10%. However, this move is viewed as contradictory to the country’s aspirations for value addition and agro-processing, as it encourages the export of raw materials. The nation possesses idle tanneries while leather material prices continue to soar.
