Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta says retailers charging above the mandated price for plastic bags can positively impact sustainability efforts.

According to Shifeta, this practice serves as a positive influence by discouraging individuals from disposing of plastic bags and instead encourages their reuse.

In 2019, the government introduced a plastic levy, imposing a charge of N$0.50 per plastic bag on retail stores to deter plastic bag usage, which was then passed on to customers opting for plastic bags to carry their groceries.

However, since then, some retailers have been observed charging between N$1 to N$5.
