Zambezi regional governor Lawrence Sampofu has called on Namibians to intensify their collective effort to act against corruption as it perpetuates inequality and injustice.
Sampofu said corruption, as a global phenomenon, has the potential to curtail the government’s poverty reduction efforts and the achievement of Millennium Development Goals, affecting the hopes and aspirations of ordinary Namibians.
He made these remarks during the commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day held in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region this week.
This year’s International Anti-Corruption Day was observed under the theme: “Uniting Against Corruption: How to Better Collaborate and Improve Implementation and Impact.” The theme emphasises the crucial relationship between anti-corruption efforts and peace, security, and development.
In his address, Sampofu drew attention to the detrimental impact of corruption on development, noting that public resources meant for essential investments in transport, energy, health, and education often end up in the pockets of corrupt individuals.
