The Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) has reported a decline in local travel for the current year, indicating a departure from the trend observed in 2019.
Gitta Paetzold, the organisation’s CEO, expressed concern over the relatively low participation of Namibians in domestic travel, aligning with similar sentiments from Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR).
Paetzold noted a modest dip in local travel, potentially attributed to general financial constraints faced by Namibians.
Comparing figures from 2019 to 2023, she observed a slight decline, a trend mirrored in the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
“Yes, we just compared our numbers from 2019 to 2023 and we do see that there is a decline of Namibian travellers, not completely low numbers but a slight decline,” she said.
She attributed the lack of local travellers to economic challenges, lingering from the impact of Covid-19 among other things.
