In a disheartening turn of events, all the trees and shrubs that were planted along Independence Avenue to mark Arbor Day 2023 have been uprooted and stolen, as confirmed by the City of Windhoek.
These green additions were planted just last month and were part of a generous donation from the First National Bank (FNB), consisting of 400 indigenous trees or shrubs and 100 flower boxes pledged to the city over the next three years.
In a statement issued yesterday, City Windhoek’s Chief Executive Officer Moses Matyayi, expressed his dismay, stating, “This deliberate removal of greenery intended to enhance our public spaces is a setback in our ongoing efforts to beautify our city.”
