Namibia’s reliance on mango imports is noteworthy, with the country spending over N$4 million annually on fresh mangoes.
During the 2021/22 financial year, Namibia imported 331 tons (331,000 kg) to fill the national demand which stood at 569 tons.
During the same parmers only contributed 238 tons to the national demand.
This and other important insights regarding the value chain for mago fruits was revealed in a latest report compiled by the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB).
The report states that the mango fruit ranks 10th among the top 10 most consumed in Namibia, with its total consumption value reaching around N$5.5 million during 2021/2022.
Overall, the 10 most consumed fruits in Namibia were valued at N$194 million during the 2021/2022 reporting period, of which only about N$11.8 million (6%) is from local production.
NAB states that mango production in Namibia remains relatively low hence the country relies on imports to saturate demand of both fresh mango fruits and processed products.
