THE Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) says it has addressed challenges it encountered with clearing beef consignments to consumers, an issue which resulted in further delays in payment to producers.

These challenges, Meatco aid was due to changes experienced in “critical logistical documentation and procedures”.

“Meatco experienced delays in clearing consignments and subsequently, the business experienced cash flow constraints to pay all producers within the established payment terms of 30 days,” the company said in a statement issued yesterday.

The Villager reported that Meatco owes cattle producers about N$350 million and that it is behind with over 88 days in payments to farmers.

Yesterday, Meatco said the challenges experienced have now been addressed and that it was “catching up with all producer accounts in arrears”.

Meatco’s timely payment to the producers is critical to the beef value chain in the country, in terms of ensuring constant throughput but also in discouraging producers from opting for weaner production that are exported alive.
