The recent comments made by Labor Minister Utoni Nujoma in the National Assembly have raised questions about preferential treatment in employment opportunities, according to analysts.
On Tuesday, Nujoma suggested that individuals from the northern regions were harder workers compared to those in the south, remarks he later officially retracted.
This occurred after Popular Democratic Movement leader (PDM) McHenry Venaani submitted a proposal about constructing restrooms.
Political analyst Rui Tyitende, in an interview with Eagle FM, pointed out that these words could be interpreted as implying that opportunities may favor Aawambo people, considering the minister’s statement and Namibia’s struggle with high unemployment rates.
Namibia faced a 20.85% unemployment rate in 2022, a slight decrease from 2021.
However, it is expected to rise to 20.95% in 2023.
