An Angolan man was arrested on Tuesday at Rudhiva village in the Mukwe constituency after allegedly trying to drown 18-year-old Albertha Malanda, an Angolan teenager.
The teenage boy was discovered by villagers tied up at the infamous river where many others have disappeared.
This is the same river where more than 19 bodies were found floating, and the same river Felix Disho Thikundeko was found floating in July with body parts missing.
According to the Kavango East crime investigations coordinator, Bonifatius Kanyetu, the Police at Mukwe received a report from the community at Rudhiva that a boy was tied up at the riverside. Upon the police’s arrival, they found a group of community members gathered at the scene with the suspect. They also found the victim with his arms tied behind his back.
It’s alleged that Malanda and the suspect came to Rudhiva in the early hours of Tuesday to sell their reeds, but they later turned against each other. The suspect then started insulting the victim and threatened to kill the victim. As the suspect was posing those threats, he grabbed the victim and tied his arms from behind, preventing him from moving.
When Malanda realised what was happening, he started screaming for help, and some community members then came to his rescue.
The victim and suspect were both taken in for questioning at the Mukwe police station. A case of attempted murder and assault (GBH) and illegal entry into Namibia without valid travelling documents were opened against the suspect.
Krausius Kathumbi Muyenga, a resident at Rudhiva, told Eagle FM the community should come together and rescue those in danger or victims of ritual killing.
“I wish we could do this more. Mukwe has become a killing zone, and anyone from any place can come and commit crimes here and disappear. This is a warning to everyone that, as residents, we are tired of the ongoing killing and dead bodies being found in the river. We will surely make sure that this type of crimes will never be committed again,” Muyenga said.
The suspect will make his first court appearance in the Mukwe Periodical Court on Wednesday, 12 October.
