Ongwediva town council has responded to fire incidents at Hifikepunye Pohamba Campus 10 times this year, including the one on Wednesday night.
The cause of the Wednesday night fire is not known yet.
Ongwediva town council spokesperson Jackson Muma, told Eagle FM Thursday that the fire incidents in the area have been a huge concern, especially the grass fired that have been reported in the town.
Since January to date, the town council has responded to 116 fire incidents, and this month they responded to 21 fire incidents.
Muma added that on 14 July this year, the town council wrote to all the institutions, malls, businesses and residents about the fire issues.
“The town council in January this year launched an awareness campaign prevent and to educate the residents and businesses owners on how to avoid the fires,” Muma said. The town council has advided residents not to burn grass but rather call the municipality or to use other methods that do not cause fire.
“On 18 August, we held a meeting with the UNAM officials from HP campus. We discussed the fire issues that have become a major concern at campus and more frequent. We highlighted certain measures to be taken on the prevention of these kinds of incidents and what is expected from the institution,” Muma said.
Muma added that the town council and the HP campus has inspected the campus site.
“People have damaged some parts of the campus fence and used the area as a passage. During the meeting with the institution officials, we looked at how to remedy the problem,” Muma said
